Annie Abbott is a professor of Spanish who teaches and writes about the power of language learning and cultural analysis to reveal our shared humanity and bring out the best of ourselves. Within the struggles of making mistakes, entering unfamiliar ground and opening ourselves to new perspectives, we can actually grow the most.
Annie grew up speaking English, teaches Spanish and uses Italian at home. Catalan is her “bonus” language from her study abroad year in Barcelona, long ago, and she considers Bergamasco her “gift with purchase” (“in omaggio”), the language she listened to her in-laws speak during her time spent in the Camonica Valley in Italy.
In her writing, Annie advocates for language education, immigrant justice and transcultural understanding.
